Reserved for the candidates belonging to the scheduled castes Bakhri assembly constituency is currently held by BJP’s Suryakant Paswan who won the seat by defeating his nearest rival Ramshankar Paswan of BJP by a margin of 777 votes in the last assembly general elections to Bihar in 2020.
Bakhri is one of the thirty-eight assembly constituencies belonging to the scheduled castes in Bihar.
Ramanand Ram was the winner of the seat in 2000 as a Rashtirya Janata Dal (RJD). Earlier Ram Binod Paswan was elected from the Bakhri assembly constituency in 1985, 1990, 1995, in both the assembly elections in 2005 on the ticket of the CPI. Bihar Assembly elections were held twice in the year 2005 due to the fractured verdict in February 2005 Assembly Election.
In 1980 too, the seat went in favour of the CPI whose nominee Ramchandra Paswan trounced Yugal Kishore Sharma of the Congress to win the seat. Ramchandra Paswan had also emerged victorious from the seat in 1972 and 1977. Yugal Kishore Sharma had also claimed the seat in 1967 and 1969 albeit on the ticket of the Communist Party of India (Marxists).
Last time the Congress won the Bakhri assembly seat was in 1962 when its candidate Medni Paswan claimed the seat by trouncing Yugal Kishore Sharma, who was in the fray on the ticket of the undivided CPI.
Bakhri is one of the seven assembly constituencies that unite to form the parliamentary constituency of Begusarai which is currently represented by BJP’s Giriraj Singh who won the seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Other six assembly
constituencies that fall under the Begusarai Lok Sabha seat are Bachhwara,
Cheria Bariarpur, Teghra, Matihani, Sahebpur Kamal and Begusarai.
