Located in the Sheikhpura district in Bihar, Barbigha is currently being represented by Sudarshan Kumar who retained the seat for the Janata Dal (United) by defeating independent candidate Gajanand Sahi by a razor thin margin of 113 votes in the last general assembly elections to Bihar in 2020.
Sudarshan Kumar had won the seat in 2015 on the ticket of Congress. He is the grandson of Rajo Singh who was elected from the seat in 1972 as an independent. Rajo Singh was elected an MP from the Begusarai Lok Sabha seat in 1998 and 1999.
In 2010 Gajanand Shahi alias Munna Shahi had retained the seat for the Janata Dal (United) by defeating Ashok Choudhary of the Congress by a margin of 3047 votes.
Barbigha, which was deserved before the 2010 elections, was won by Ashok Choudhary in 2000 and February elections in 2005. He served as a minister in the Rabri Devi government. He was once sent to the jail for his in connection with murder of veteran Congress leader and former Sheikhpura and Barbigha MLA Rajo Singh. His father Mahavir Chowdhary, a veteran Congress leader, had won successive four elections to the Barbigha seat since 1980. He had emerged victorious in 1980, 1985, 1990 and 1995. Barbigha was made a reserved constituency for the scheduled castes in 1977.
In the October/November polls in 2005, Barbigha was won by Ramsundar Ram Kanaujia (R.R. Kanaujia) who had defeated Mahavir Chowdhary who entered the fray as his son was in jail. R.R. Kanaujia had unsuccessfully contested the Agiaon seat in the Bhojpur district on the ticket of Janata Dal (secular) in 2010.
Barbigha is one of the six assembly segments the combination of which goes on to create the parliamentary constituency of Nawada which is currently represented by Vivek Thakur of the BJP.
