In the Sixth Lok Sabha elections held in 1977, Asansol Seat was once again bagged by Robin Sen. Ananda Gopal Mukhopadhya of Congress wrested the seat from Robin Sen in 1980. Riding on the wave of sympathy generated by Indira Gandhi’s assassination, Ananda Gopal Mukhopadhya increased his victory margin and defeated Bamapada Mukherjee of CPM by 86666 votes. While Anada Gopal secured 334212 Bamapada got 247546 votes.
