A Left bastion since 1991, Attingal had elected Congress’ Adoor Prakash  in 2019. While Adoor Prakash has again been nominated by the Congress for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls the BJP has fielded Union Minister of State for External Affairs V. Muraleedharan.  The Left Democratic Front has fielded sitting Varkala CPI(M) MLA V. Joy.

The Attingal Lok Sabha constituency that came into existence in 2008 after the dissolution of the Chirayinkeezhu constituency comprises seven Assembly seats, namely Attingal, Aruvikkara, Chirayinkeezhu, Kattakada, Nedumangad, Vamanapuram, and Varkala. The total electorate is 13,73,827, including 7,31,870 women, 6,41,938 men, and 19 transgender persons.

Attingal Lok Sabha constituency is home to famed Sivagiri Mutt established by the great social reformer, Sree Narayana Guru (1856 -1928). Samadhi (the final resting place) of this great Hindu reformer and philosopher here attracts thousands of devotees every year during the Sivagiri Pilgrimage days - 30th December to 1^st January.

In a society torn by the taboos of caste system,  Sree Narayana Guru had propagated the ideology: one caste, one religion and one god.
