Once a bastion of the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), Alipurduars Lok Sabha constituency in the North West Bengal had elected BJP leader John Barla in 2019 when he defeated his nearest rival and TMC candidate and the then incumbent MP Dasrath Tirkey by 2,43,989 votes. RSP is one of the constituents of the Left Front that ruled the state for a record 34 years from 1977 until 2011 in the state.
Alipurduars parliamentary constituency has been represented for five times by Pius Tirkey who won all his elections as an RSP member.
Pius Tirkey lost the 1996 Lok Sabha election to Joachim Baxla of RSP when he contested as a Congress candidate. Joachim Baxla won the Lok Sbaha elections four times in a row. He joined TMC when he was denied party ticket to contest the Lok Sabha elections in 2009. He, however, lost to Dasrath Tirkey of RSP from Kumargram assembly seat, election to which was held in 2011.
