Electoral History
In 1971 Parliamentary election, Robin Sen of CPI(M) (Communist Party of India (Marxists) won the Asansol Lok Sabha seat by defeating Narayan Choudhury of Indian National Congress by a margin of 33660 votes.

In the Sixth Lok Sabha elections held in 1977, Asansol Seat was once again bagged by Robin Sen.

Ananda Gopal Mukhopadhya of Congress wrested the seat from Robin Sen in 1980. Riding on the wave of sympathy generated by Indira Gandhi’s assassination, Ananda Gopal Mukhopadhya increased his victory margin and defeated Bamapada Mukherjee of CPM by 86666 votes. While Anada Gopal secured 334212 Bamapada got 247546 votes.

In the Ninth Lok Sabha elections which saw the defeat of Congress Party under Rajiv Gandhi following charges of corruption against his government, Asansol Lok Sabha seat was wrested by Haradhan Roy of CPM who defeated Congress candidate Pradip Bhattacharjee. Haradhan Roy, Pradip Bhattacharjee and Amarnath Keshri of BJP secured 374281, 332044 and 21077 votes respectively.

Though Congress once again came into the power at the centre after the failed Governments of V P Singh and Chandarsekhar, Asansol Lok Sabha seat continued to remain with CPM whose candidate Haradhan Roy once again defeated Deba Prasad Roy of Congress. BJP increased its percentage of votes remarkably and it secured 19.34% of the votes by garnering 135641.

Haradhan Roy won the  seat third time in 1996. Bikash Chowdhury of CPM emerges winner by in 1998 defeating Moloy Ghatak of West Bengal Trinamool Congress.  Congress candidate S. S. Ahluwalia, now with BJP, came third. BJP did not field its candidate as it was fighting the 1998 Lok Sabha Elections in alliance with Trinamool Congress.

In 1999 Bikash Chowdhury continued his winning spree by defeating Moloy Ghatak of All India TRINAMOOL CONGRES (AITC). Manik Upadhyay fielded by Congress came third by securing only 10.95% of the votes.

Elections to the Fourteenth Lok Sabha in 2004 witnessed the end of the Vajpayee led NDA (National Democratic Alliance) government. CPM once again held sway over the Asansol seat. Its candidate Bikash Chowdhury defeated Moloy Ghatak once again.

After the death of Bikash Chowdhury in 2005, election to Asansol Lok Sabha seat was held in which Bangsagopal Choudhury of CPM defeated Moloy Ghatak of Trinamool Congres (TMC).

In 2009, Bangsagopal Choudhury of CPM defeated Moloy Ghatak of Trinamool Congres (TMC) by 72956 votes though Left Front fared badly in the parliamentary elections in its stronghold of West Bengal.
