One of the 9 assembly constituencies located in the Paschim Bardhaman district of West Bengal, Raniganj assembly is composed of the geographical areas covered by Ward nos. 33–37, 88-93 of Asansol Municipal Corporation and Andal community development block.
Asansol Uttar, Asansol Dakshin, Barabani, Durgapur Purba, Durgapur Paschim, Jamuria, Kulti, Pandabeswar are the other eight assembly seats in the district.
The constituency is one of the seven assembly segments that fall under the Asansol Lok Sabha constituency.
Electoral History
Raniganj assembly seat is currently held by Tapas Banerjee of Trinamool Congress. In 2021 he had defeated his nearest BJP rival Bijan Mukherjee by a close margin of 3,556 votes in a bipolar contest.
In 2016, Runu Dutta had won the seat on the ticket of CPI (M). In the previous assembly elections in 2011, he was defeated by Sohrab Ali of Trinamool Congress.
Earlier Raniganj had been a pocket borough of the CPIM which has been winning it since 1967. Its member Haradhan Roy, a former three- time MP from Asansol Lok Sabha seat, had emerged victorious from the Raniganj assembly seat in seven times. Bansa Gopal Chowdhury, a former minister in the Left Front government and also an ex Asansol MP, had represented the assembly seat four times in a row.
