Located in the Begusarai district of Bihar, Bachhwara assembly constituency is currently held by its legislator Surendra Mehata who won the seat by defeating his nearest rival Awadhesh Kumar Rai of CPI by a slender margin of 487 votes in the last assembly elections to Bihar in 2020.
Awadhesh Kumar Rai has been elected from the Bachhwara assembly constituency in 2010, 1995 and 1990. Once a stronghold of the CPI, Bachhwara had elected CPI member Ayodhya Prasad Singh in 1985.
Ramdeo Rai of Congress had won the seat in 2005 and 2015.
Bachhwara seat went only once in favour of the Lalu led Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in 2000 when its candidate Uttam Kumar Yadav emerged winner by virtue of his victory over Awdhesh Rai by a close margin of 458 votes.
Bachhwara is one of the seven assembly constituencies that combine to form the parliamentary constituency of Begusarai which is currently represented by BJP’s Giriraj Singh who won the seat second time in the 2024 Lok Sabha general elections.
Other six assembly constituencies that fall under the Begusarai Lok Sabha seat are Cheria Bariarpur, Teghra, Matihani, Sahebpur Kamal, Begusarai and Bakhri
