sympathy generated by Indira Gandhi’s assassination, Ananda Gopal Mukhopadhya increased
his victory margin and defeated Bamapada Mukherjee of CPM by 86666 votes. While

Congress. Congress candidate S. S.
Ahluwalia, now with BJP, came third. BJP did not field its candidate as it was
fighting the 1998 Lok Sabha Elections in alliance with Trinamool Congress.
In 1999 Bikash Chowdhury
continued his winning spree by defeating Moloy Ghatak of All India TRINAMOOL
CONGRES (AITC). Manik Upadhyay fielded by Congress came third by securing only
10.95% of the votes.
Elections to the Fourteenth
Lok Sabha in 2004 witnessed the end of the Vajpayee led NDA (National
Democratic Alliance) government. CPM once again held sway over the Asansol
seat. Its candidate Bikash Chowdhury defeated Moloy Ghatak once again.

Chowdhury in 2005, election to Asansol Lok Sabha seat was held in which
